"CASA BONITA MI AMOR" DOCUMENTARY COMES TO DENVER IN SEPTEMBER

It took two years for “South Park” creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker to revive the beloved Casa Bonita restaurant, and soon local fans can see behind the scenes of what it took to get the project to the finish line. On Thursday, the duo announced public screenings of a documentary about the Pink Palace’s reopening. The film – titled “¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” – will play at the Alamo Drafthouse Sloan’s Lake (4255 W. Colfax Ave., Denver) on Sept. 6, 7, 8 and 12. The documentary follows Stone and Parker as they seek to save the beloved landmark they visited as kids. That includes from the time they purchased the iconic eatertainment venue, known for its 30-foot indoor waterfall and cliff divers, to the point that they were finally able to open the doors. The documentary debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in June and will play at the Telluride Film Festival on Sunday. Tickets to the local screenings are now on sale at drafthouse.com/denver/show/casa-bonita-mi-amor.

BRONCOS SET CONSTRUCTION TIMELINE, OUTLINE VISION AT GROUNDBREAKING

The Broncos’ headquarters and training facility construction project, in Centennial, is off and running, after Thursday’s groundbreaking celebration and photo op, fencing has appeared in recent days, construction equipment is moving in, and the $175 million project is quickly ramping up. All of this marks the next phase in the project, which will culminate in a 215,000-square-foot building that CEO and owner Greg Penner said Thursday will be a world-class facility focused on football. The building timeline doesn’t feature much wiggle room. The goal is to move the team from the 34-year-old existing facility into the new building in June 2026, in time for training camp that year.

CLEAR CREEK CANYON PROJECT: TRAIL, BRIDGES, FEATS OF ENGINEERING

Jefferson County’s Open Space division is spending $80 million to extend the Clear Creek Canyon trail three miles upstream from its current terminus at Tunnel 1, two miles west of Golden. About 1.25 miles of new trail is slated to open just west of Tunnel 1 next year, with another 1.75 miles to follow in 2026. Eventually the trail will connect with Clear Creek County trails through Idaho Springs and beyond. The project includes seven new bridges over Clear Creek, one new bridge over the highway, a new underpass beneath the highway and two new trailheads with restrooms and parking spaces for 170 cars. Great Outdoors Colorado provided a $7 million grant for the current project. The Denver Regional Council of Governments chipped in another $10.25 million. GOCO previously gave the trail effort $10.5 million for segments that have already been completed. But the remainder of the $80 million is coming out of the Jeffco Open Space budget.

GAYLORD ROCKIES SEEKS MAJOR EXPANSION TO WATER PARK, HOTEL

Gaylord Rockies Resort & Convention Center, at 6700 N. Gaylord Rockies Blvd. near Denver International Airport, submitted plans to the city of Aurora that call for adding 450 rooms and a 47,000-square-foot indoor addition to its water park. The expansion would increase the hotel’s capacity from 1,501 rooms to 1,950 rooms. The proposed room and water park expansion would take place on a parking lot to the southeast of the hotel. The expansion would reduce the number of parking spaces at the Gaylord to 2,376 spots and includes the removal of nearly 300 self-parking spots. The new water park, called Soundwaves, will sit to the west of a new guest room tower and connect to the Gaylord’s current indoor pool building. It will be similar to the waterpark at Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, Tennessee. There are five other Gaylord convention resort properties around the country.

DEVELOPER LISTS ASPEN MANSION FOR $30M - THREE TIMES WHAT HE PAID IN 2020

Billionaire real-estate developer Jorge Pérez is looking to make a significant profit on his home in Aspen. His 10,000-square-foot property, just outside downtown Aspen, is coming on the market for $30 million, according to listing agent Melanie Muss of Elliman, more than three times the $9.5 million Pérez paid for it in 2020. Muss said the price escalation is warranted because of the extreme uptick in the Aspen market since the Covid pandemic, and that the value is compounded by the fact that the property is larger than could be built today, because of new development restrictions. Located at the base of Aspen Highlands, the property sits on close to an acre of land. A Mountain-style home, it has multiple balconies, sprawling indoor and outdoor areas for entertaining, six en suite bedrooms, two offices, a formal dining room, eight fireplaces and a temperature-controlled wine room and tasting area.

ART GROUPS SHARE IN $1.8 MILLION IN STATE GRANTS

Several arts organizations on the Western Slope are among those statewide to share in about $1.8 million in grants over the next two years from the Creative Industries Division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. Gov. Jared Polis announced the grants, which went to 125 such groups in 33 Colorado counties. National Endowment for the Arts research shows that rural counties that have arts organizations see a higher population growth and have higher incomes than rural counties without performing arts. That research also shows that two out of three rural businesses say that arts and entertainment are important in attracting and retaining workers. That’s partly why 40 percent of the grant awards went to such rural counties as Mesa, Garfield, Delta and Montrose counties. Local grant awards went to:
  • Delta County: Valley Youth Orchestra, $4,000; Grand Mesa Arts Center, $6,500; and Blue Sage Center for the Arts, $6,500; and Delta Egyptian Theater, $6,500
  • Garfield County: Voices, $6,500; the Andy Zanca Youth Empowerment Program, $6,500; and the 5Point Adventure Film Festival, $7,500
  • Mesa County: Grand Junction Symphony Orchestra, $8,500; and The Art Center of Western Colorado, $8,500
  • Montrose County: Magic Circle Players, $7,500

NEW INDIE THRILLER TO BE FILMED AT HISTORIC STONER RANCH

Filming of the new indie thriller “Bonding” is set to begin at the historic Stoner Ranch next month with director Victoria Trofimenko, as the ranch’s new owners work to reinvent the former site of the Stoner Ski Area. Stoner Ranch Productions CEO Barry Nordstrand said that “Bonding” will soon begin casting dozens of locals to work on the film’s production and interviews for roles. Nordstrand, who is the film’s executive producer, lives in Telluride part time. Trofimenko, a member of the European Film Academy and the Ukrainian Film Academy, is relatively new to Colorado since relocating from Ukraine.
“Bonding” is an indie thriller that hinges on an evening of family bonding — with a shovel. The film’s plot follows three siblings who reunite at the ranch but have a murder coverup on their hands. The Stoner Ranch, on Hwy. 145, has been around since 1880 and is infamous for entertaining the visits of outlaws such as the Hells Angels and Butch Cassidy, but in the 100-year gap between outlaw visits, it became a popular destination for world-class skiing. With support from the state’s film office, students at Colorado Mesa University will also be at Stoner Ranch during filmmaking to create a documentary about how “Bonding” is being created.

LA PLATA COUNTY ADOPTS ROAD IMPACT FEES

The La Plata County Board of County Commissioners on Tuesday approved a resolution levying a one-time fee on new development to fund road improvements. Road impact fees are intended to ensure that development responsible for upping road use pays for the increased wear and tear on county roads. They also are part of the county’s strategy to address what financial planners have called a “crisis” of funding for the county’s road and bridge department. The fees are anticipated to generate $569,000 annually, or about $12.5 million between now and 2045.
Study results estimate that just over 19 percent of road improvement costs over the next 21 years will be attributed to future development. The anticipated road impact fee revenue roughly aligns with that estimate, given that the $12.5 million in revenue will cover about 20.8 percent of total improvements costs over the same period. For future developments that will increase road traffic, building permit applicants will have to pay a fee based on the floor area of the project. A new residential dwelling of 900 square feet or less will pay a $1,210 impact fee. At the upper end of the range, a new dwelling of 3,201 square feet or larger would pay $3,690 per dwelling.

MIDDLE-CLASS AMERICANS ARE FLOCKING TO THESE 10 METRO AREAS

A desire for new or better housing was the most popular reason for moving in 2023 among middle class Americans, according to a HireAHelper.com analysis of Census Bureau data. Just under 9 percent of American households in the middle 60 percent of earners — those making between $30,000 and $150,000 a year — moved in 2023. Of those, almost 14 percent said they did so because they wanted new or better housing, and around 10 percent said they went in search of a more affordable place to live. While over half (57 percent) of the middle-income households who moved stayed in the same county, nearly 25 percent moved to a different county in the same state. About 18 percent moved across state lines.

MEADOW CLOSURES FOR ELK RUT IN RMNP

The annual elk rut in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park is nearing and that means the Park's meadows, where the large animals meet for the fall mating season, will be closing for parts of the day. Beginning Sept. 1, the annual meadow closures go into effect to prevent the disturbance and harassment of elk. The meadow closures are also in place for safety and enjoyment of park visitors who are enjoying wildlife viewing during the elk rut season. Meadow closures will be in place between 5 p.m. to 10 a.m., daily, with closures remaining in effect through Oct. 31. Meadowed areas that will be closed include:
  • Horseshoe Park
  • Upper Beaver Meadows
  • Moraine Park
  • Harbison Meadow
  • Holzwarth Meadow
Here are four tips to view wildlife that visitors can enjoy each fall:
  • Keep your distance and view wildlife with respect.
  • When viewing elk, keep back at least 75 feet. This is the length of two school buses.
  • Don’t keep approaching wildlife until they react.
  • As always, elk calling and the use of spotlights or vehicle headlights for spotting wildlife is prohibited within Rocky Mountain National Park.
