MAINTENANCE ON EISENHOWER/JOHNSON TUNNELS WILL CAUSE NIGHTTIME CLOSURES

The Colorado Dept. of Transportation announced that work in and around the Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnels on Interstate 70 began Sunday, July 9 and will continue for about a year, with the scheduled completion in the summer of 2024. The work includes overhead Variable Message Signs and Closed-Circuit Television from mile point 213.11 to mile point 216.18 in and directly around the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnel. These tools are used for monitoring traffic flow and incidents, displaying information for travelers, and making the tunnel as efficient and safe as possible. The work will require overnight full closures of one bore/direction of the Eisenhower Tunnel Sunday-Thursday nights between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. Only one tunnel bore will be closed at a time. Travel will continue for both directions through the open bore with traffic stops and alternating traffic. Travelers can anticipate 20-minute delays. There will be no closures on weekends.

FINDING A LAWYER IN RURAL COLORADO IS DIFFICULT

In the Denver metro area, it seems there are lawyers everywhere, but in some places in rural Colorado it is difficult to find any. The American Bar Association considers areas with fewer than one attorney for every 1,000 residents to be "legal deserts." There are 23 counties in Colorado that have fewer than one attorney for every 1,000 residents. There are no active attorneys with a registered address in Bent, Costilla, Crowley or Hinsdale counties. In Denver, on the other hand, there are 13 attorneys for every thousand residents. Pitkin County has 12 for every thousand, and in Boulder County, there are five per thousand.

MAJOR STORM HITS NORTHEAST

The National Weather Service said Monday that there was "a considerable flood threat with a high risk of excessive rainfall expected across much of New England." The NWS in Burlington, Vermont said, "This is a very rare event not only for the North Country but for the U.S. as a whole. Considerable to catastrophic flash flooding is likely to occur over portions of our forecast area through Monday." Heavy rain caused extreme flooding in the Hudson Valley in New York, killing at least one person. New York governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency at 9 p.m. Sunday for Orange County, about 8 miles north of New York City, where about 8 inches of rain poured down. More than 1,000 flights scheduled to fly into or out of LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy or Newark airports had been canceled as of Sunday night, according to FlightAware.

CPW: WAKELESS WEDNESDAYS PROVE TO BE A BIG HIT

More than two years ago, in January 2021, Colorado Parks and Wildlife considered a proposal to create “Wakeless Wednesdays” at Highline Lake State Park in Mesa County. CPW approved the proposal. During Wakeless Wednesdays, no boat or watercraft is allowed to operate at speeds that create a wake. Now in its second summer, Park Manager Alex Martinez said, “Wakeless Wednesday is a huge hit.” According to Martinez, “Last year, Wednesdays weren’t just a little busier than the other weekdays, it was like twice as busy as the other weekdays.”

LA RAZA PARK BECOMES DENVER’S THIRD CULTURAL HISTORIC DISTRICT

Last week, the Denver City Council voted unanimously to make La Raza Park Denver’s third cultural historic district. The park, which covers one block at West 38th Ave. and Navajo St., has been a historic part of the development of Denver. Denver’s north side was originally the site of Denver’s thriving Italian community and the city acquired the land at 38th and Navajo in 1906 as a park site for the Italian community.
In 1931, it was named Columbus Park and a pool was located there about 10 years later. As demographics changed, the Latino community grew up in the area after the war, between 1945 and 1990. In the application for its historic designation, La Raza was identified as “an incubator for Chicano and Latino culture,” with the park the gathering place for events, celebrations and organizing civil rights rallies for Chicanos. The locals convinced the city of Denver to turn the pool over to local residents in 1970.
In 1990, the iconic Kiosko was dedicated. The Kiosko is a structure modeled after an Aztec pyramid. With the Kiosko and plaza, more formal gatherings took place, including ceremonial dances, Día de los Muertos memorials and La Raza Park Day. However, a move to rename the park La Raza failed in 1988 and it took until 2020 for the city to officially change the name to La Raza Park.
