MAKE SURE TO VOTE TODAY
Today is election day and Coloradans can still register to vote online at GoVoteColorado.gov and then vote in person until 7 p.m. tonight. In-person voting is available from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. As of early Monday morning, only 35 percent of eligible Colorado voters had voted. Around 1.34 million ballots had been returned. There are over 3.81 million registered voters in the state. At this point in 2020, nearly 2.54 million ballots had been returned. That was a presidential election which normally produces higher voter numbers, but in the 2018 midterm over 1.61 million ballots had been returned with one day to go before the election.

SUBTROPICAL STORM NICOLE WILL LIKELY BECOME A HURRICANE, HEADING FOR FLORIDA
The National Hurricane Center has issued a hurricane watch for subtropical storm Nicole that formed early Monday over the Atlantic Ocean. Nicole is projected to reach hurricane strength before coming ashore somewhere along the eastern coast of Florida later this week. The hurricane watch means hurricane conditions are possible within about 48 hours and the watch covers a 200-mile stretch of Florida from Hallandale Beach to the border of Volusia and Brevard counties. Nicole’s center was about 435 miles east of the Bahamas Monday afternoon and was expected to strengthen in the warm water near the islands.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS LOOKING AT BANNING COMPOSTABLE MATERIALS AT LANDFILL
Glenwood Springs public works and landfill officials appeared before city council last week to address the issue of restricting some materials at the South Canyon Landfill. The primary focus would be to ban or restrict items such as yard waste, metal, cardboard and food waste, which could be easily composted or recycled. Yard waste accounts for 8.7 percent of the total waste going into the landfill, about 3,350 tons worth, instead of being composted. Another 16 percent of waste going to the landfill is food waste, according to Liz Mauro, the landfill manager.

PHASED APPROACH FOR DURANGO DOWNTOWN REDEVELOPMENT
Last year, Durango city officials were estimating the cost of the engineering design of the Next Step pedestrian improvement project was $400,000. The city sent out requests for proposals in August and the lowest of the proposals returned was three times that amount, $1.2 million. As a result, the Durango City Council decided to move forward with a phased approach to the Next Step program. With the new phased approach, the city will continue its traffic study from Fifth Street to 14th Street, including side streets, in addition to an inventory and survey of utilities across that same area and would begin the engineering design for "a few" blocks as part of the initial phase.
