The Biden administration announced Thursday the suspension of new oil and gas leasing and drilling permits for U.S. lands and waters for 60 days as part of a broad review of programs at the Dept. of Interior. WILL YOU NEED TO WEAR A MASK ON TRAILS AT THE COLORADO NATIONAL MONUMENT?

President Joe Biden issued a number of executive orders on his first day in office, including one requiring that masks be worn on federal lands. How that order will be implemented is now a major question for residents and visitors in western Colorado. Since much of the land on the West Slope is public land, does it mean people will have to wear masks on the trails at the Colorado National Monument or on U.S. Forest Service trails. Officials with the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service admit they are uncertain of the exact extent of the order, and say they will be developing specific guidance in the coming days and weeks.

GJ TAX RECEIPTS FOR 2020 REMAINED SURPRISINGLY STRONG

The city of Grand Junction, like everywhere in the nation, suffered economically when activity shut down in the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In April, the city had a 25 percent drop in sales and use tax revenue, and city officials expected there would be continuing downturns for the rest of the year. However, by the end of the fiscal year, the city had rebounded to end up less than 2 percent below 2019 in sales and use tax revenues. The city collected $57.1 million in combined sales and use tax revenue, or about $1.1 million less than 2019 and $600,000 more than 2018.

SUMMIT COUNTY SHARES VACCINE DOSES WITH NEIGHBORING COUNTIES

Summit County is nearing a "saturation point" in the program to vaccinate those aged 70 and older in the county, and this week, county officials began sending some doses of the vaccine to neighboring Clear Creek, Park and Lake counties. There remains enough vaccine to serve all those in Summit County, but the goal is to also help the state reach its next level of vaccine distribution, which includes essential workers. Today, Friday, Jan. 22, the Summit Community Care Clinic, in partnership with the county’s public health team, will be hosting a distribution drive at the Fairplay school campus. Summit County officials also sent 250 doses to Clear Creek County, where officials hosted a vaccine distribution drive Wednesday.
