SEGWAY TO QUIT MAKING TRANSPORTERS

Segway, the manufacturer of a popular two-wheeled personal transporter, announced that it would quit production of its Segway PT, popular with tourists and with police officers, as of July 15. Segway's inventor Dean Kamen boldly proclaimed his personal transporter would revolutionize transportation when it came out in 1999, but, with an original price tag of about $5,000, it never proved popular to consumers. In 2007, Segway got into the lightweight scooter business and by the end of last year, the namesake personal, stand-up transporter accounted for only 1.5 percent of the company's revenue.

READY TO FLY AGAIN?

Most Americans planning to travel this summer will go by car rather than flying. However, despite reductions in the number of flights and number of passengers, some planes are still flying full. If you have to fly or choose to fly this summer, here are some tips:
Masks

  • Every airline except Allegiant Airlines and Sun Country Airlines has announced that passengers and crew members are required to wear face-coverings throughout check-in, boarding and during the flight itself

Blocked Middle Seats
Airlines that are blocking middle seats:

  • Alaska Airline
  • Delta Air Lines
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • JetBlue Airlines
  • Southwest Airlines
  • Frontier Airlines is blocking a limited number of middle seats in the front of the plane

Other considerations

  • Frontier Airlines is the only airline requiring temperature screenings from all passengers before boarding
  • United has not instituted capacity restrictions, but if 70 percent of the seats are booked on a flight, passengers can move to another flight
