NEW YORK CITY'S "CHARGING BULL" IS ON THE MOVE
| |
| |
The "Charging Bull" has been a landmark in lower Manhattan in New York City. The 7,000-pound bronze statue attracts thousands every day to its location in Bowling Green Park to see it and take pictures. City officials, however, citing safety problems, are moving the Charging Bull to a location safer for crowds near the New York Stock Exchange. The proposed move is not without controversy. The bull's sculptor, Arturo Di Modica, and the Bowling Green Association, a neighborhood group, are opposed to the move from the location where the bull has been for nearly 30 years.

REVIEWING HISTORIC AVALANCHE SEASON
| |
| |
Officials of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center were in Carbondale Thursday presenting a slide show and talk on the record-breaking avalanche season last winter. There was particular focus on the first two weeks in March when there were a record number of slides, including 87 slides reaching the D4 or D5 level, the most destructive. The total number of D4 and D5 slides from 2010 through 2018 in Colorado was only 24. CAIC recorded 1,000 slides March 1-14, which means it was likely there were five times that many.

The Durango School District 9-R Board Thursday released a statement which said the board decided not to arm school guards with firearms. The decision came following two community meetings and reviewing research as well as conducting a survey which produced more than 1,500 responses. 9-R Superintendent Dan Snowberger said the survey and meetings showed the "community is equally split" on the issue, while school board member Marianna Valdez noted "there has not been conclusive evidence that supported a decision to arm security specialists."

WHY IS THANKSGIVING SO LATE THIS YEAR?
| |
| |
This year, Thanksgiving is November 28…so why is it so late?
-
Since the time of Abraham Lincoln, Thanksgiving was celebrated on the last Thursday in November…until 1939, that is
-
In 1939, November started on a Wednesday meaning there were five not four Thursdays in the month
-
Because of the situation in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt decided to make the next-to-last Thursday in November the official date
-
However, in 1940, next-to-last Thursday was Nov. 21
-
In 1941, Roosevelt realized the problem he created and after Thanksgiving that year he signed a bill making the official Thanksgiving Day on the fourth Thursday in November
-
November 1 this year was on a Friday, making the fourth Thursday Nov. 28 and it is the latest Thanksgiving has been since 2013
