LOVELAND SKI AREA WILL OPEN THURSDAY

The continued warm, dry weather across Colorado has played havoc with snow making at the state's ski resorts and opening dates for ski areas continue to remain in flux, with Arapahoe Basin the only ski area currently in operation. A-Basin will be joined by Loveland Ski Area Thursday, as Loveland officials announced it will open Nov. 10. Also Monday, Copper Mountain Resort announced it was pushing its opening day from Nov. 11 to Nov. 18. Keystone Resort announced last week that it was pushing back its planned opening day from Nov. 4 to a tentative date of Nov. 11 because of the heat.

STOCKS SOAR, DOW UP 371 POINTS

In another indication of the heightened volatility heading into the U.S. presidential elections, investors rushed back into U.S. stocks sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average up 371 points and the S&P 500 to its biggest gain since March. The increase in the S&P ended the 9-day skid for the index, it longest losing streak in almost 36 years. Virtually all trading of stocks, currencies, and bonds is expected to be on hold today as foreign markets and U.S. markets await the outcome of the election.

GARCO LOOKS TO TIGHTEN PERSONAL POT GROWING REGS

The Garfield County commissioners Monday added amendments to the county land use code to tighten regulations on personal marijuana growing. The amendments restrict personal marijuana growing to 36 plants grown in a 300-square-foot contiguous area for properties of 20,000 square feet or more. For smaller lots, the amendments allow 12 plants per lot, which can be grown in an area of 100 square feet. Under state law, an individual is allowed to grow up to six plants for themselves, but state law also allows people to "assist another person" and also allows individuals to grow marijuana plants as "caregivers" for up to five patients.

DURANGO COUNCIL TABLES DECISION ON ORGANIC PARKS

The Durango City Council Monday decided to provide full funding, $22,000, for its organic parks program, but the councilors remained undecided on how many parks would be included in the program. The original proposal to council was to have only two parks maintained using organic-only practices. That proposal was amended to have six of the city's eight parks in the organic program, leaving only the highly used athletic parks outside the program. City council will discuss the issue further in December.
